Herman Hollerith received a patent for his tabulating machine
On the 8th January, 1889, Herman Hollerith received a patent for his punch card tabulating machine, the fore-runner to the computer.
The tin can was invented in 1810, but people would be bashing away at it with a hammer and chisel for 48 years until Ezra Warner invented the first can opener.
