On the 19th June, 1900, Michael I. Pupin received a patent for his improvement in telephony, where loading coils allowed for long-distance transmissions.
The tin can was invented in 1810, but people would be bashing away at it with a hammer and chisel for 48 years until Ezra Warner invented the first can opener.
